Restaurant of the Month- Schmuckers’s

By Catherine Rhegness

Schmucker’s is a great place to go if you’re looking for somewhere to go with your family and delicious food at all the different times of the day. Harvey and Nola Schmucker opened Schmucker’s dairy bar in 1948 focusing on pies and ice cream made by Nola. Their son Allen worked with his parents in the early years and took over with his wife Alice. He changed the name to Schmucker’s Restaurant and served breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They had three children Tim, Doug, and Judy. When Allen died, Doug took on Schmucker’s full time. Co- Owner Doug Schmucker strongly believes the way they are staying connected to Schmucker’s dairy bar has been a huge factor in success. “We’re not trendy, not a national chain you can find in every city. We offer real home cooking. I know a lot of national chains claim that, but when I have someone here hand-peeling potatoes, chopping French fries, and making pies every day, I think that gives ‘home cooking’ a better definition compared to what you’d get at a chain,” says Doug Schmucker.  Schmuckers has served three whole generations of customers. One of my favorite things to get there is their breakfast burrito. The breakfast burrito is stuffed with scrambled eggs, cheddar cheese, and sausage topped with salsa and sour cream on the side. I also like their cheeseburgers and fries. Rich in flavor, they come out hot and fresh. Another favorite of mine is definitely their homemade pancakes. These pancakes are very big and fluffy. I recommend the pancakes with syrup drizzled on top. My favorite side to get is their bacon. The warm bacon, right off the skillet, crispy and crunchy is delicious. To top everything off, I recommend a slice of vanilla peanut butter pie. This pie is very soft and creamy. I highly recommend this restaurant if you want a fun time and scrumptious food.

Fall Fashion

By Emme DeMilt

Yes, Ottawa Hills you are right. It’s sweater weather!! That means we have to throw those shorts out the window and bring in our jeans and sweats. But we need to find the best fashion so you can look on fleek this season. But we won’t just stop at fashion we will also talk about workout clothes and the comfiest P.Js to sleep in.

Let’s start at the basics. Sweaters! Now, guys, you can maybe skip this paragraph and go down to the next one unless you want to find soft comfy stylish sweaters. With all of the cold weather, you need something stylish and cute to wear indoors other than your jacket. Sweaters from Old Navy and H&M are so nice and cute and comfy. They come in all different sizes and patterns that you can snag to look like a model this fall. And maybe even next!

Now if you want to look gorgeous and you want to be comfy you might opt out for a dressy outfit. For the girls out there you might want a dress skirt, or cute jeans and a nice top. For the guys out there you might need some khakis and a dress shirt. If you are a girl and want some cute dresses to check out Nordstrom, Anthropology, and Forever 21. And with this season coming up you might need a wedding or dance dress. To get these Lulus is a good place to get adorable dresses for a decent price of fewer than 100 dollars. If you are a guy Old Navy is a good place to get nicely priced fall clothing. Also, you can go to the next luxury for ideas on what clothes to put together.

Now for workout clothes. You can get some nice clothes that will keep you warm and absorb your sweat from Under Armour. Also if you want a step up for stylish Adidas has got your back. Very nice and comfy with shoes you can also use for everyday fashion use. And also Lululemon has those pants and tops that you will want to wear every time you workout. With patterns for girls and guys. You will look on fleek at the gym, soccer practice, or even everyday lunchtime. So remember to check these out online or even in the store.

Are you stocked up? Are you ready to show off your new fall closet? Did you get sweaters for sweater weather? Get Ready for Fall Ottawa Hills because it is approaching so quickly.

October Restaurant of the Month- Sakura’s

By: Catherine Rhegness

Sakura’s is the October restaurant of the month. This Japanese steak and seafood restaurant was founded by Marc Ha. Marc in a small town in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Japanese food is supposed to be healthy, fresh, and low fat. Sakura’s has over twenty locations in the U.S. and is spreading Japanese culture across the states.

When you first arrive you are provided a clear mushroom soup warm and fresh. The broth in the soup adds a hot taste and the mushrooms add more flavor and filling. Along with the soup, you get a cool, crisp ginger house salad. This salad cools your mouth down from the warmth of the soup and has a ginger kick to it. You can order a hibachi meal, which they will cook on a grill in front of you or a meal off the menu that is prepared in the kitchen. The options to eat on the hibachi grill are chicken, salmon, sirloin, tuna, shrimp, tilapia, sea scallop, lobster, and a vegetarian meal. You can also order the one pounder, which means you can order two of these options for a discounted price. On the kitchen menu, you can order a tofu or vegetable teriyaki, vegetable tempura, chicken teriyaki, chicken katsu, tonkatsu, assorted tempura, beef teriyaki, salmon teriyaki, and shrimp tempura.

Your chef will entertain you with a fun show while cooking your meal. This show will start off by throwing their knives and will also toss a slice of zucchini to you and you have to try and catch it in your mouth. Next, they will start cooking your meal hibachi style. When they first start the grill, there’s a big fire heating up the area. Once the fire goes out, they will start cooking your meal. Once they are done, you can taste the freshness of your food, as it was just cooked in front of you. I highly recommend the hibachi chicken and sirloin. Sakura’s created an experience to remember and cooked some of the best food I’ve had in my life.

Animal of the Month

Sponsored by the Toledo Humane Society

by Catherine Rhegness

The September Dog of the Month is Layla. Layla is a 50.8 pound, shiny black,  mixed breed. Layla was brought to the Toledo Area Humane Society August 30, 2018, by a cruelty officer. She is originally from Toledo but was neglected by her owner. Layla is the sweetest and most loyal dog you’ll ever meet. Layla was brought to the Humane Society dirty with scabs, incredibly long toenails, and her teeth had tartar but had no major medical problems. She is between 2 and 5 years old and is fully grown. She’ll rest her head on your lap, her warm, chocolatey eyes gazing back at you. But, she’ll never pass down playing fetch. Layla loves to run and get the ball, then bring it right back to you to play again. Layla is great with young children since she’s very gentle. She doesn’t bite, but loves to give you licks! Layla would be a great companion and best friend to any family who gives her the love she’s been longing for her whole life.
